A couple of weeks ago, Alex from the Refined Agency emailed me saying she was organizing a foodie photo battle at El Dorado Cantina with a bunch of Instagram influencers from L.A. I would be leading a team, and so would my friend @VegasFoodBaron who runs another Vegas foodie Instagram. There would be three L.A. teams. I wasn’t quite sure what it would be like, but it sounded fun, so I said yes!

The team I chose was Suzy (@Happytummy_702), Terri (@SavorSinCity), Paul (@Ryu1075) and Mimi (@Hei02Miyachi.) So you know I had a really great line-up from the get-go. Mimi was unfortunately unable to attend because her flight got delayed, but she was there in spirit and cheered us on from afar.

We got our instructions and guidelines a few days prior to the event. We put a loose plan together for the day of, and we borrowed some lighting from our friend Amelinda (@pbalv.)

When we first arrived to El Dorado Cantina, we were super nervous because ALL of the other teams had massive lighting kits. All we had was a tiny little lightbox and a tiny circle light! But it ended up not mattering.

The first challenge was to make and photograph guacamole, and we were apparently being judged on teamwork. Above is the photo we came up with.

We were the ONLY ones to go outside to take the photo, and it ended up working out. After the first challenge, all of the teams started venturing outside to get that natural lighting.

One of my favorite shots was for the “selfie” category where we had to have our face in the photo. The dish that came out with tacos. In true instagrammer fashion, everyone on my team took a selfie of themselves eating a taco. Then, they arranged themselves holding that photo of themselves around my face, where I was eating a taco. It took “photo within a photo” to a new level.

One of my other favorite shots was the “food porn” category where we took it literally, and had Suzy and Terri eat a burger at the same time.

Overall it was a super fun night and I hope that we get the chance to “battle” it out again sometime soon! It was great meeting LA foodies who I follow but don’t usually get to see.
